How can I give my dog exercise?
ByWhat are some activities I can do with my dog to get him some exercise, I know of walking already. He wont play fetch though. I got him 4 days ago and hes a beagle/shepherd mix, age 9 months.
If I get him too excited he might jump or nip. In this case I should just stop playing and walk away? I don't want him to get into a bad habit.
And can beagles swim lol??
Swimming in my pool or a lake or both?

ALL dogs do not love swimming. My Lab/Chow mix has webbed feet so you would assume she would LOVE the water. She HATES it. She tries to walk on top of it. Your dog my love it though, just check it out and see what he thinks of it. Don’t just throw him in the pool though, that’ll scare the dickens out of him. Take him in the pool, holding him and get him used to it gradually. Be gentle with him like he’s a human baby and he’ll probably like it.
Other things you can do are throw a ball or frisbee for him. To get your dog to play fetch you just throw the ball and then once the dog goes after it and picks it up you just clap your hands and call him back…jump up and down if you need to…once he comes back to you then you pet him and tell him "GOOD DOG!" and make the biggest, super huge deal about it. Keep doing it and he’ll get it.
I like to sit on the floor with my dogs and take a toy and drag it around behind my back while they chase it. They love that.
You can throw a ball straight up in the air and let them jump up after it, they love that one too.
Dogs also need "exercise" for their minds, not just their bodies. Start teaching your dog some new tricks. Just 10 minutes or so at a time. You’ll be amazed how much he can learn in a week. Only teach one thing at a time. Once he has a new trick down perfectly then move on to another new one. Some ideas are….the basics…sit, stay, shake, come, no, leave it, heal (I know I’m forgetting some!)….more fun ones are….gimme five, bang you’re dead ("shoot" dog and he plays dead), bow (teach dog to bow with front paws down and butt in the air), say grace (dog crosses paws like he’s praying), sit pretty (up on hind legs), dance (up on hind legs hopping), wait (can’t pick up treat until he’s told he’s allowed to), balance a treat on his nose then throw it up and catch it….there’s a million of them and they are sooo fun to teach. There’s nothing like spending time training your dog, it really solidifies your bond with them. Do the training after his exercise time when he’s not so energetic and it’ll probably go better.
Good luck with him and congrats!!
