Can two dog breeds live together in the same house safely?

I am planning on buying both a shuh tzu and a cavalier king charles spaniel. Can these two breeds live together, or could there be problems?

The cavalier is a mild mannered dog that loves company. I think the shuh tzu is also mild mannered so they should get along.
