I just went to http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com and looked up this food. All I could find was the lamb variety (which actually has more chicken in it than lamb). The ingredients looked mediocre. The big thing I see is menadione sodium bisulfite complex which is an artificial source of Vitamin K which many believe is linked to liver problems.
Also, I think Pedigree really sucks. If you want to add something to his diet, and pedigree is all you have available. Once a week make big pot of chicken and rice (you can boil them together) and towards the end of cooking add in a bag of frozen mixed veggies. Perhaps when serving throw in a spoonful of yogurt or cottage cheese.
When looking for food, these are the things I think are most important.
!) All meat and fat is a named source (you know what a chicken is, but poultry is kinda vague). First ingredient should be meat (meal is okay, but meat followed by meal is better). Avoid by-products if possible, if not possible, they should appear after 2 other meat sources. The more meat in the top 5 ingredients, generally the better the food.
2) Limit grains. Avoid Corn, wheat, and soy all together if possible. Use whole grains. No grain should be listed more than twice, as there could be more of that grain in the food than meat.
3) NO artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives.
If you stick to these things when selecting a food, you’ll pick something pretty good.
If cost is a concern, try Kirkland Lamb and Rice from Costco, I’ve heard a lot of good things from that. I feed my girls (Lab mixes) Innova. I don’t know what’s available at Wal-Mart well enough to tell you what is the best food, but use that website I listed earlier to look through your options. The best food at PetsMart is Blue Buffalo. At Petco, you can get Solid Gold and Natural Balance as well (both really good). In fact, Solid Gold was formulated by a recognized breeder of Great Danes.
Hope this helps. Good luck with you pup.
