Dominance exercises to show my dog I’m the boss?

Does anyone know any dominance exercises I can use to show my dog that I'm the boss? For some reason, he started humping me today! I don't want him to rule the house.

I already make him wait for his food and he's not allowed on the bed anymore. I also go through the door first.

He's bealge.

Any tips?

for my Great Dane. They need high fat 22% a day, so I give her that (18%) and supplement with Pedigree can food mixed in. Does anyone have an opinion of this food?

my dogs went off shop bought food both cans and dried. Have tried to change types and to not feed them so they are hungry and would eat anything to no avail. As a last resort to tempt them to eat I started cooking proper meat and veg to give them and they wolf it down, now they wont eat anything else. How can I ensure they get enough vits and minerals to keep them healthy.?

So, how did your Saturday go? Mine went like this. I got up at 6 am and checked the http://www.saveourpetsfoodbank.org website to make sure they were open.

As a proud member of the working poor, I'm forced to get help to cover certain expenses when I'm between freelance positons. I often get a little help from my church. I scrimp on EVERYTHING, so usually the only help I ask for is decent pet food. I had my heart torn to pieces right before the pet food recall when my perfectly healthy dog mysteriously got sick and died over the course of a couple weeks. I refuse to buy crappy pet food, and I'm not too proud to beg to keep my "children" safe.

After the little bruhaha a couple weeks ago when a reader asked me if SOPFB was still operating (and the answer was supposedly yes), I decided to go there to see what the place was like. I checked their web site last night, early this morning, and right before I left for the hour long drive there.

Fully caffinated for the drive I reached their offices at just a few minutes after they were supposed to open - 10 am. I walk up to the door and like a scene from bizarro world Clerks, there's a piece of paper taped to the door that basically reads, "I ASSURE YOU, WE'RE CLOSED!"

Apparrently , this charity that supposedly gets support from a number of local charities, as well as sponsorship from national groups (like the PetSmart charities), ran out of food and didn't bother to tell anyone.

A third of a tank of gas for the round trip probably would have covered one bag of store brand dog food (not enough to get through the month, but it would have helped), and I burned it away for nothing. They did not just run out in the 4 or 5 minutes difference between when I arrived and when they opened. They had to have known for days and just didn't bother to alert any of their poor and desperate clients who spend a not insignificant part of what little money they have to get to the SOPFB offices.

Several people in cars came while I was there including existing customers, and no one had been informed. SOPFB has a blog, for cripes sake - it can be used for more than posting PR, you know.

Is Save Our Pets Food Bank just extremely unorganized, or is it something else? The For Sale sign really is there in front of the building.

Epilepsy

Also known as seizures, epilepsy disorders normally occur from viral infections, and environmental factors as well. Even though an inaccessible seizure isn't always a problem, dogs that have recurring seizures should never be bred. Vets can recommend medicines that control recurring seizures, although medicine isn't always effective. Although epilepsy doesn't affect the health of a Golden Retriever, it does have an effect on breeding. You can never tell if it is indeed heredity, therefore breeding is pretty much out of the question - to avoid passing it on to the litter.

Skin allergies

Skin allergy is the most common medical issue with Golden Retrievers. Skin allergy is normally the result of allergens such as flea bites, dust, airborne pollen, food, and even mold. Symptoms will vary, although they can include bits, scratching, licking, and even ear infections. Diet is extremely important here, as it can help to prevent a lot of these problems. If you consult with your vet, you can more than likely eliminate the risks your pet has of getting a skin allergy.

Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism is a condition that causes the thyroid gland to malfunction. Golden Retrievers that are affected by this disease will normally show such symptoms as coat problems or obesity. This medical problem can also result in a lack of fertility as well. A lack of fertility can be a big problem for breeders, as it makes it very hard for the affected Golden Retriever to breed.

The treatment of hypothyroidism involves taking the oral supplement for hypothyroidism on a daily basis. Once it has been treated successfully, the prognosis will appear to be normal and dog will have a normal, healthy life span, providing there are no other medical problems. This condition is somewhat common with Golden Retrievers, and can be diagnosed by your vet.

Some Golden's who suffer from hypothyroid problems will have seizures, although this will stop once they go on the oral treatment medicine. Even though the hypothyroid condition isn't associated with epilepsy, you should monitor your dog to be on the safe side. You don't want to take any chances with your dog coming down with epilepsy, which is why you should always have your vet do routine checks.

Even though medical problems are somewhat common with Golden Retrievers, you can help to prevent them by making sure your dog is healthy. If you do your part and make sure that you treat your Golden well, you shouldn't have anything to worry about. Golden Retrievers are generally healthy dogs, although they can get ill from time to time. If you take your dog to the vet and get him treated as soon as he gets sick - he'll be better and back to his normal self in no time at all.

Is the "Save Our Pets Food Bank" Dead?

I got this letter this afternoon from a user who does not want to be identified. Blockquotes is the original letter, in between is my reply. I hadn't even known my site link to them was in any of the search engines already - this site is brand new. (As you can tell since not everything is even working right now!)

Do you know if SaveOurPetsFoodBank has shut down or moved?
I went there last month and there was a for sale sign up and workers were remodeling the place and there was hardly any pet food in the warehouse. Also, whoever was supposed to be there had run off and there were like a dozen women and children just sitting there waiting in the sun and the warehouse doors were wide open. I waited for over an hour for someone before I gave up. Some of the other people just took food and left. I didn't think it was right to take any since I haven't even signed up yet.

As far as I know they're still open the last blog post was six days ago.

I went back today to try again and this time the entire place was locked up. I knocked and everything and no one answered.
Here's something else that's strange. The woman at the office of my churchwho told me about them three months ago printed a page of their website for me and the hours were 9-12. Last month the hours were 10-1. Now they're 10-12.

I called the number listed and got their voicemail. The voicemail and the website both give the same address.

I'm not really sure what to tell you since I've never gotten help from them - they're too far away from me normally.

After I was laid off from my last job I did use Daffy's Pet Soup Kitchen, about two and a half months ago. I have a dog with some medical problems and they gave me some Science Diet that's worked really well.

I'm pinging a couple blogs with this post (like here that have talked about SOPFB before. Maybe they know more. In the mean time you should probably call Daffy's - they post a schedule that they keep up to date, and they also have "local offices" so you may have a branch near you.

I hope this is just paranoia.

Update: I had to meet my mom downtown so I did a drive by on the SOPFB address. They're right across the street from the Sweetwater Brewery. There is no sign on the building indicating occupation and there is actually a for sale sign on the property.

So I have no clue what's going on. Still.

Provide a common area for both dogs and your guests. Invest in a fenced-in enclosure where the dogs can play with each other without annoying the rest of your guests. And for the dog enthusiasts of the party who would love to take a break from mingling and head over to the doggie hangout, a perfect common area keeps the fun and games in harmonious order.

Consider the seating arrangements you have made. Think about where each person will be seated and make sure that the dogs are secured in an area that faces the party. Your pets want to be in on the action, even if it's just to see what's going on.

If you are hosting a backyard party at night, consider the safety of your animals. Should you allow them to run free, attach a small flashlight to each of the dogs' collars.
