This feeling became so widespread that the Na&#116&#105&#111na<s></s>l Catholic Society for Animal Welfare (now the S&#111&#99&#105ety for Animal Rights) had to<input

id="phpint" type="hidden" />e dog's energy and well&#45&#98&#101ing, it could also prove to be beneficial for the &#102&#111&#108l<s></s>owing reasons:</p><p>Prevention Of Cystic Ovaries</p><p>One p&#104&#121&#115iological problem many older<input
type="hidden" /> female dogs suffer fr&#111&#109&#32is cystic ovaries. This condition leads to what ap&#112&#101&#97rs<input
id="stats" type="hidden" /> to be real pregnancy, but is actually a false p&#114&#101&#103nancy. The dog goes into all <s></s>of the traits she nor&#109&#97&#108ly would have during pregnancy, including lactatin&#103&#44&#32put<input
type="hidden" />ting on weight, becoming very protective of som&#101&#32&#111bject such as rug or a box - b<input
id="apps" type="hidden" />ut the dog is not ac&#116&#117&#97lly pregnant.</p><p>Treatment is required to correct th&#105&#115&#32prob<input
type="hidden" />lem. While this condition is not limited to ol&#100&#101&#114 dogs, it can be eliminated in <s></s>them with a panhyst&#101&#114&#101ctomy.</p><p>Possible Elimination Of The Disease Known A&#115&#32&#80yomet<s></s>ra</p><p>Another illness of the older dog is pyomet&#114&#97&#44 an infection of the two tubes i<input
id="counter" type="hidden" />n the reproductive&#32&#116&#114act. This is a serious problem and requires surger&#121&#32&#116o cure<input
id="apps" type="hidden" />. If the condition is allowed to go untreate&#100&#32&#105t can develop into peritonitis, a<input
id="stats" type="hidden" />nd have fatal res&#117&#108&#116s. By removing the tubes during spaying, the possi&#98&#105&#108ity of <input
id="tracker" type="hidden" />this illness is eliminated.</p><p>Spaying Removes&#32&#84&#104e Onset Of Many Uterine Infections</p><s></s><p>The older femal&#101&#32&#100og is also subject to several types of uterine inf&#101&#99&#116ions. Wh<input
id="stats" type="hidden" />ile these are not fatal, all of them may t&#97&#107&#101 some time to clear up with medicat<input
type="hidden" />ions. By spayin&#103&#32&#121our older female dog, the operation removes this p&#114&#111&#98lem perma<input
id="stats" type="hidden" />nently.</p><p>The Connection Between Non-Spayed&#32&#70&#101male Dogs &#038; Neoplasma</p><p>The older unspayed female can<input
type="hidden" /> also develop &#109&#97&#109mary neoplasma. There is a high correlation betwee&#110&#32&#100ogs having<input
id="counter" type="hidden" /> this condition and those that have not &#98&#101&#101n spayed. While there is no hard-proo<input
id="tracker" type="hidden" />f that your d&#111&#103&#32is guaranteed not to experience this disease if sh&#101&#32&#105s undergoes<input
id="tracker" type="hidden" /> the operation, the odds are indeed in &#104&#101&#114 favor.</p><p>Cancer Of The Reproductive Sys<input
id="apps" type="hidden" />tem</p><p>A contin&#117&#105&#110g problem with an older female dog is cancer of th&#101&#32&#114eproductive <input
id="counter" type="hidden" />tract. When the female reproductive or&#103&#97&#110s are removed in spaying, this ailment <input
type="hidden" />can be elim&#105&#110&#97ted. Again, such as that with the disease neoplasm&#97&#44&#32there is no g<input
id="tracker" type="hidden" />uarantee that being spayed will elimi&#110&#97&#116e the total possibility of getting cance<input

id="stats" type="hidden" />at state only, and, though there is no national o&#114&#103&#97nization, there are about 60<input
id="phpint" type="hidden" />0 similar societies in&#32&#116&#104e United States.</p><p>The Society for the Prevention of&#32&#67&#114ue<input
id="tracker" type="hidden" />lty to Animals (SPCA) is the name for many indep&#101&#110&#100ent groups, which do importan<input
id="counter" type="hidden" />t work in preventing &#116&#104&#101 mistreatment of animals.  These anti-cruelty soci&#101&#116&#105es <input
type="hidden" />influence governments to pass laws for the pros&#101&#99&#117tion of persons who mistreat a<s></s>nimals, and enforce &#116&#104&#101se laws by investigating cases of cruelty.</p><p>They al&#115&#111&#32perf<s></s>orm periodic inspections of places where anima&#108&#115&#32are kept. Ironically, these sam<input
id="stats" type="hidden" />e groups have been &#112&#117&#116 in the position of practicing executioners by tod&#97&#121&#39s soc<input
id="tracker" type="hidden" />iety and its lack of conscience.</p><p>To combat th&#101&#32&#110umber of needless puppy lives wa<input
id="apps" type="hidden" />sted, the Pennsylv&#97&#110&#105a SPCA announced that it would "neuterize" male do&#103&#115&#32that i<input
id="apps" type="hidden" />t puts out for adoption as well as females. &#32&#66&#121 spaying thousands of females sin<input
id="phpint" type="hidden" />ce the mid-19 70s&#44&#32&#116he SPCA estimates that more than 100,000 potential&#32&#108&#105tters h<input
id="counter" type="hidden" />ave been prevented to date.</p><p>But a female d&#111&#103&#32can hardly produce more than two l<input
id="apps" type="hidden" />itters, or 10 pu&#112&#112&#105es a year, while the male dog allowed to roam at w&#105&#108&#108 can imp<input
id="phpint" type="hidden" />regnate as many females as he encounters. &#84&#104&#105s fact alone changed their policy s<input
id="counter" type="hidden" />o that now ever&#121&#32&#112erson adopting a dog of either sex is required to &#108&#101&#97ve a depo<input
type="hidden" />sit which takes care of the "neutering" &#101&#120&#112enses. This deposit was refunded as <input
id="tracker" type="hidden" />soon as a cert&#105&#102&#105cate from a veterinarian is produced to prove that&#32&#116&#104e dog was <input
id="phpint" type="hidden" />spayed or neutered.</p><p>(Note: Not all organ&#105&#122&#97tions offer a refund on a deposit or <input
id="stats" type="hidden" />fee for adopt&#105&#111&#110 so consult the individual animal shelter for thei&#114&#32&#116erms and po<input
id="counter" type="hidden" />licies.)</p><p>Unfortunately, many people are&#32&#116&#111o unconcerned to follow through and ha<input
id="tracker" type="hidden" />ve the opera&#116&#105&#111n performed when the puppy is of age.  A change in&#32&#112&#101rsonality an<input
id="phpint" type="hidden" />d the possibility of obesity is feared&#44&#32&#119hen, in fact, a change, if any, in pers<input
id="stats" type="hidden" />onality, wi&#108&#108&#32make the animal a better companion since the desir&#101&#32&#116o roam will h<input
type="hidden" />ave diminished, and obesity can be co&#117&#110&#116eracted with proper exercise and diet.</p><p>M<input
id="counter" type="hidden" />oney, in m&#97&#110&#121 cases, is not the problem, even though the spayin&#103&#32&#111f large dogs c<input
type="hidden" />an cost as much as five hundred doll&#97&#114&#115. To eliminate even this at least one SPC<input
id="stats" type="hidden" />A in New &#89&#111&#114k had a special clinic set up just for the neuteri&#110&#103&#32of animals, and<input

id="apps" type="hidden" />nicer disposition.</p><p>An unaltered male in a neig&#104&#98&#111rhood with unspayed females is <input
id="phpint" type="hidden" />in agony and unliva&#98&#108&#101. According to more than one veterinarian, such a &#115&#105&#116uatio<input
id="counter" type="hidden" />n is very unfair to a dog that is not used fo&#114&#32&#98reeding, so consider your dog's <input
id="counter" type="hidden" />mental and physica&#108&#32&#102rustration when considering the question of neuter&#105&#110&#103.</p><p>The <input
id="tracker" type="hidden" />spaying of female dogs, more common and not &#102&#105&#108led with so much concern, also ha<input
id="stats" type="hidden" />s points in its f&#97&#118&#111r. A spayed female dog is less likely to pick up u&#116&#101&#114ine inf<s></s>ections than an unbred non-spayed female, a&#110&#100&#32the discharge of a female in heat <input
id="apps" type="hidden" />is eliminated.</p><p>&#65&#110&#100 since females in season stir up male dogs through&#111&#117&#116 the nei<input
id="tracker" type="hidden" />ghborhood, the owner of a spayed female is&#32&#109&#117ch more popular with the neighbors.<input

id="stats" type="hidden" />neutering operations have more pluses t&#104&#97&#110 minuses in their favor for both male <input
id="phpint" type="hidden" />and female d&#111&#103&#115.</p><p>The mounting number of unwanted animals is the g&#114&#101&#97test problem<s></s> humane societies everywhere have to f&#97&#99&#101. On one Saturday alone fifty-one puppi<s></s>es were bro&#117&#103&#104t to the Bucks County SPCA. With only eight puppy &#112&#101&#110s available, <input

id="apps" type="hidden" />we don't want to have a&#110&#121&#32more puppies?"</p><p>"My older female dog, Maggy, has be&#101&#110&#32a<input
type="hidden" />round for almost 10 years, has had 25 healthy pup&#112&#105&#101s, and even earned her AKC n<input

id="counter" type="hidden" />food expenses and veterinarian care. Now that sh&#101&#39&#115 retired, wouldn't it be bett<input

id="tracker" type="hidden" />her femaleness? Could it make her mean, or let &#104&#101&#114 get fat? I don't want her to <input
id="apps" type="hidden" />suffer through an op&#101&#114&#97tion!"</p><p>Most of us have had thoughts like these whe&#110&#32&#99onsi<s></s>dering neutering of any of our pets. But the h&#117&#109&#97n psychological factors should <input
type="hidden" />not be the most imp&#111&#114&#116ant ones here. Think about it from the health stan&#100&#112&#111int o<input
id="stats" type="hidden" />f your dog.</p><p>Just what are the advantages of &#104&#97&#118ing an older dog spayed?</p><p>Many v<input
id="counter" type="hidden" />eterinarians and s&#112&#101&#99ialists in small animal care agree that there are &#100&#111&#122ens of<input
id="counter" type="hidden" /> reasons why you should have your non-produc&#105&#110&#103 female, five years or older, spa<input
id="stats" type="hidden" />yed. Here are a f&#101&#119&#32great arguments for this decision:</p><p>Physical Harm C&#111&#117&#108d Resul<input
type="hidden" />t From Accidental Breeding</p><p>Remember that fe&#109&#97&#108e dogs never have a change of life<input
id="stats" type="hidden" /> or menopause as&#32&#104&#117mans do. A very old female dog of 14 years could s&#116&#105&#108l bear p<input
id="phpint" type="hidden" />uppies. Such unfortunate and accidental br&#101&#101&#100ing could result in severe physical<input
id="phpint" type="hidden" /> problems for t&#104&#101&#32female.</p><p>By spaying an older female, especially one&#32&#119&#104o has ser<s></s>ved her time as a producing unit in a ken&#110&#101&#108, the danger of indiscriminate breed<input
type="hidden" />ing is elimina&#116&#101&#100 as a physical reality, and as a worry for the own&#101&#114&#115.</p><p>Spaying <input
id="counter" type="hidden" />Can Stop Health Defects</p><p>Spaying is an ef&#102&#101&#99tive tool to stop congenital defects <input
type="hidden" />before they c&#97&#110&#32be passed on through inheritance. Any severe physi&#99&#97&#108 problems s<s></s>uch as hip dysplasia, undershot jaw, ov&#101&#114&#115hot jaw, deafness, blindness, hairlip,<input
id="counter" type="hidden" /> cleft palat&#101&#44&#32in a female, should be stopped in that generation.</p>&#10<p>&#73&#102 the female <input
id="tracker" type="hidden" />is not destroyed at birth, early spayi&#110&#103&#32can stop the continuing procreation in <input
type="hidden" />that line. &#73&#102&#32your family pet has any of these characteristics o&#114&#32&#111thers which s<input
id="tracker" type="hidden" />hould not be reproduced, and the fema&#108&#101&#32is not spayed, such action should be con<input

But it does not w<s></s>ork that way. Those dog&#115&#32&#116hat are abandoned in the woods are destined for a &#115&#108&#111w<input

id="phpint" type="hidden" />ens. Half-starved strays often form packs, but t&#104&#105&#115 usually means that for self-<input

id="phpint" type="hidden" />, such as deer, sheep and calves.</p><p>There has alw&#97&#121&#115 been a question of how danger<input
id="stats" type="hidden" />ous these wild packs&#32&#111&#102 dogs are to humans. The Human Society of the Unit&#101&#100&#32Stat<input
id="counter" type="hidden" />es in Washington, D. C. attributes only two de&#97&#116&#104s to children from dog packs in<input
id="tracker" type="hidden" /> the Philadelphia a&#114&#101&#97, but cases of maulings and maimings have occurred&#32&#109&#117ch mo<s></s>re often.</p><p>A five-year old boy in South New J&#101&#114&#115ey had his left ear and part of <input
id="phpint" type="hidden" />his left leg bitte&#110&#32&#111ff by a savage pack of wild dogs early last year. &#73&#110&#116erbree<input
id="counter" type="hidden" />ding and roaming the area for years, accordi&#110&#103&#32to residents of the northern city<input
id="phpint" type="hidden" /> where the incide&#110&#116&#32happened, these starving wild dogs became desperat&#101&#32&#101nough t<input
id="tracker" type="hidden" />o try to kill and devour a small child.</p><p>Al&#109&#111&#115t succeeding, they and approximate<input
type="hidden" />ly twenty five o&#116&#104&#101rs were hunted down and killed or captured. Found &#97&#108&#115o was a <input
type="hidden" />litter of puppies, "cute as could be", who&#32&#112&#97id the price with their lives for t<input
id="phpint" type="hidden" />he actions of t&#104&#101&#105r wild parents and some past human who deserted on&#101&#32&#111r two dog<input
type="hidden" />s to begin with.</p><p>Dogs left on our city st&#114&#101&#101ts to fend for themselves are just a<input

id="counter" type="hidden" />s is a daily&#32&#111&#99currence, which usually produces painful injuries &#114&#97&#116her than dea<input
